How to Plan a 5D4N Bromo, Ijen, and Tumpak Sewu Adventure (Without Stress)

So you’ve seen the jaw-dropping photos of Mount Bromo’s smoky sunrise, the turquoise lake inside Ijen crater, and the epic curtain of Tumpak Sewu waterfall on Instagram…

And now you're thinking: “I want to do all of that — but how the heck do I plan it without going crazy?”

You’re not alone.

Most travelers don’t realize how tricky it can be to fit three different destinations, far apart, into one smooth itinerary — especially if you’re new to East Java.

But don’t worry. We’ve crafted a 5 days 4 nights (5D4N) itinerary that balances adventure, rest, and good vibes, so you don’t burn out trying to see it all.

Let’s break it down day by day — all killer, no filler. ✌️

Day 1 – Arrival in Surabaya / Malang → Head to Bromo

  1. Arrive early in Surabaya or Malang (morning flight recommended).
  2. Private transfer or shared ride to Cemoro Lawang — the gateway village to Mount Bromo.
  3. Easy afternoon: chill, enjoy mountain views, grab dinner, sleep early.
  4. Stay overnight at a local guesthouse near Bromo.

🛏 Tip: Staying close to the crater means you can catch the sunrise without crazy travel time at 3 AM.

Day 2 – Mount Bromo Sunrise Tour → Transfer to Lumajang

  1. Wake up around 2:30–3:00 AM to start your Bromo sunrise adventure.
  2. Visit these top spots:
  3. Viewpoint at Penanjakan Hill
  4. Sea of Sand
  5. Mount Bromo crater
  6. Teletubbies Hill (Savanna)
  7. Tour ends around 9–10 AM.
  8. Have breakfast, shower, then drive to Lumajang (around 5 hours).
  9. Check in and rest at your accommodation near Tumpak Sewu.

🎒 Pro Tip: Bring a scarf or buff — the volcanic sand can get intense!

Day 3 – Explore Tumpak Sewu Waterfall & Goa Tetes

  1. Start early for the Tumpak Sewu hike. The earlier, the better (cooler weather & better lighting).
  2. Highlights:
  3. Top viewpoint: The famous panoramic shot of the falls.
  4. Trek down to the bottom of the waterfall — prepare to get wet!
  5. Optional: Explore Goa Tetes (drippy cave and mini waterfalls).
  6. Finish by noon or early afternoon, then chill, have lunch, and head to Banyuwangi (or stay another night in Lumajang).

📷 Bring a dry bag if you plan to take your phone or camera!

Day 4 – Midnight Trekking to Ijen Crater & Blue Fire

  1. If you haven’t traveled to Banyuwangi yet, use the afternoon to do so.
  2. Rest in the evening — you’ll need the energy.
  3. Start around midnight with a drive to Paltuding Basecamp.
  4. Hike ~3 km uphill (takes about 1.5 to 2 hours).
  5. Witness the surreal blue fire and watch the sunrise over the stunning acidic crater lake.
  6. Descend after sunrise and return to your hotel for breakfast and a nap.

😷 Gas masks are usually included in guided tours — you’ll need one for safety near the sulfur vents.

Day 5 – Chill & Travel Back (or Continue Your Journey)

  1. Enjoy a relaxed morning.
  2. Depending on your plan, you can:
  3. Catch a train or flight from Banyuwangi.
  4. Take a ferry to Bali (only 1 hour across).
  5. Or travel back to Surabaya if you need to fly from there.

🧳 That’s it — three of Java’s most iconic natural wonders, done right in 5 days!

Trying to squeeze Bromo, Ijen, and Tumpak Sewu into a short trip can be stressful if you’re not familiar with Java’s geography and logistics.

But with a well-paced itinerary like this, you get maximum wow with minimum stress — and plenty of time to actually enjoy the experience.
